Public Lecture

The School of Nursing and Midwifery will be hosting an Open Public Lecture with Professor Richard Bentall, Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Sheffield  on “MENTAL HEALTH IS IN THE WORLD, NOT A DEFECT OF THE PERSON”. 

Professor Richard Bentall is a psychologist and researcher. He is the author of “Madness explained: Psychosis and human nature”. He has studied the cognitive and emotional mechanisms involved in psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, paranoid delusions and manic states. Most recently, his research has focused on why social risk factors provoke the cognitive and emotional changes that lead to these symptoms.

1 in 12 young people hear voices. One of the great problems is that nobody talks about it. To help open a dialogue, the Irish Institute of Mental Health Nursing, in conjunction with the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems are holding an evening for young people who hear voices, their families & supporters.  The evening will offer people an opportunity to meet other young people who hear voices or see visions.  People can find out how people can learn to cope with difficult voices and visions, and hear from people who have recovered.
The evening offers an opportunity to challenge the stigma around voices and visions – the time has come to break the taboo!
Attendees will be able to take part in creative activities – and learn more about the Voice Collective project in the UK and tell us what extra support is needed over here.

Parents, family members, friends & youth workers are welcome at this event. Come along and you’ll have the chance to share your experiences, gain support and pick up some new tips or ideas.

The evening will be facilitated  by Rai Waddingham who set up an innovative project supporting young people who hear voices/see visions, and their families. Rai has personal experience of hearing voices and seeing visions  since her youth, but now has found  ways of dealing with them.
